"I hope so! All good houses, old or new, need a friendly ghost or two!"[1]

—Woodsman's Wife to Anna[1].

The Woodsman's Wife and the mother of Anna is a character in Over the Garden Wall (comic series).

History[]

She was raised in the country until marrying her husband, who she met at school. She had a child, Anna, with him, and the three lived in the city until the Woodsman was barred from his position as municipal judge. She suggested they move out to her deceased aunt's home in the country, and her husband agreed that they could make do there.

It appears she did most of the work maintaining the land there, as her husband didn't have the skills necessary for farming even on a small scale. She taught her daughter rhymes to help her remember things, such as plants from the forest that could be eaten.

She died of an injury from an unknown animal[1], possibly the Beast which she sustained during a hunting trip while Anna was still young.

However, she was also "allowed" to return for a fortnight, appearing as an apparition in reflective surfaces to guide Anna and teach her things she was not able to teach her before.

Relationships[]

Woodsman | Husband[]

Anna's mother met the young Woodsman during their school days in the city. She admits that both she and her husband had some feelings for each other; although she expressed her sentiments first. Both appeared to be studious, thus we can infer that he noticed her for her presence in their class. When war broke out they fled by train and married each other. Once they settled down and the Woodsman begins his duty as a municipal judge, they have

Anna. She is very much in love with her husband, as with her many terms of endearment she uses in the comics while she was alive. It is unknown if their parents approved of the marriage, but in their first home, seen in a flashback, there are photos of relatives on their walls[2]. So perhaps there was some acceptance later on. Her husband relied heavily on her for everything, seeing as he preferred being indoors, and expressed fear of nightfall in their cabin. She admits to Anna that she enjoys her husbands nature. The Woodsman gradually accepted her death, and became more present in the welfare of Anna by distrusting others and trying to keep her away from the unspoken dangers of the woods.

Anna | Daughter[]

Like most parents, Anna's Mother clearly loved her daughter. They were almost inseparable when they moved to the cabin in the woods. Anna listened admiringly to her mothers every word, and Anna's Mother taught everything she had learned from the countryside. Much like her mother, Anna

was optimistic and always saw the bright side of things. After her death, she returns to keep her daughter company and telling her stories of her youth, even teaching more lessons to Anna while her husband was away. She did not want to leave Anna, but because she was a spirit and resolved her regrets with her family she disappeared. Though, not without expressing her love to her daughter and vowing to watch over her.
