The School Animals are characters in "Schooltown Follies", and are the students of Miss Langtree. They also perform Potatoes and Molasses with Miss Langtree and Gregory. Unlike Beatrice and Fred, the school animals can't speak, despite sharing many characteristics with humans. Many of the school animals are able to play instruments, seen during Potatoes and Molasses, and at the end of the episode, when they perform for a school fundraiser. It seems that all of the school animals sleep, eat and learn in the School House.

Animals[]

The animal students consist of:

  • A Bunny.
  • A Piglet.
  • A French Bulldog.
  • A kitten, called Kitty[1].
  • A Fox.
  • Two sheep--the older one in a gray dress and hat, the younger one is in a blue suit and brown boater hat.
  • A raccoon wearing a faded blue pageboy cap and matching single-strapped overalls with a patch.
  • A Deer.
  • A Possum called Jeffery by Greg.
  • An elephant who arrives later on as a new student called "Pooree"[2] in the comics. He is noticeably too big for his desk and bed, and is very clumsy causing the children to tease him initially. He is however, a skilled cook.

Appearances[]

Early Animal Concept Art[]

Official Animal Development

Character Development Sketches by Seo Kim.

From the concept art Kitty the cat has the same design in the final production and Piglet, while the Bunny appeared to have two potential styles. The first style on the left more closely resembles her final design. The French Bull Dog in this concept art initially wore an 1880s boys play suit without the outer jacket and a newsboy hat with upper calf-length trousers. Even the Fox's concept art displays him wearing a smock like outer jacket and knee-length trousers that appeared to be rolled up. All animals do not appear to wear shows then.

Official Animal Children Art[]

Animal Children Together

Finalized Art in Production.

Despite there being two animal children (the goat and sheep) that are only used for this much scene, the other animals, including Greg's animal friends from outside (Deer, Fox, and Possum) become students of the school. This is based on the comic series where the the animal trio have a more permanent role in the school. The main animal children, the cat, later known as Kitty, the Fox, the Piglet, the Pug, and the Rabbit, are also present in this scene. Kitty the cat is a brown tabby who wears a yellow dress with white bloomers underneath, and matching yellow bonnet. The French Bulldog, wearing a navy-and-white sailor suit, and navy hat. The Piglet wears a green bowtie, green checkers hat, and a brown leather belt holding up kaki trousers. A Fox, wearing a brown striped suit and hogan hat, with a greenish-brown bowtie. A Jeffery the Possum wears worn down gray-green button trousers. The Raccoon wears a blue poor boy/newsboy hat with knit patches at the back that matches his blue half slung overalls which also has a knit patch. The Deer, who wears classic yellow button-up union suit/long john pajamas with a faded indigo patch on the back. The Bunny, wears a blue Victorian era children's day dress with a mid shoulder length cape and wide brim bowler hat with a yellow ribbon. Later in the comics, Pooree the elephant dressed in a green suit and yellow neck scarf with red polka-dots, and wears large leather shoes.

Trivia[]

  • Appear to be inspired by Richard Scarry's Busytown animals.
  • Alternatively, they may be inspired by Beatrix Potter's illustrations.
  • In the 2016 comic book we are revealed the backstory of "Kitty" the cat and her family.[2]
  • The 2016 comic reveals a new animal student.[2]
  • The animals are in fact capable of behaving like humans and being domesticated. Kitty the cat was different from her family who followed their animal instincts[1]. Likewise Pooree the Elephant is skilled at cooking[2]. Frogs have displayed their knowledge and other school animals when needed, such as during the animal school inspection[3].
  • Miss Langtree appears to understand what the animals are saying when they speak, this applies to educators seen in the comic series.[3]
  • Apparently, in The Unknown, there is a 'School Committee' for human children, and an 'Animal School Committee' for animals.[3]
  • The Animal School Committee has implied that Miss Langtree's boarding school students are advanced because of how ahead they are academically (ex: studying modern folklore); they appear to be much more kind than the school committee for human children.[3]
  • The animal children appear to know 'A Tale of Two Cities' and 'Hiawatha's Childhood'.[3]
